Under Colors.Taiwan
In centuries of historical context, Taiwan has experienced the two phases of “colonizing” and “immigrating” intertwined with each other, which gradually forms complicated issues of a sense of identity. Although the influence of the historical scars is waning over the past few decades, the crux of numerous social issues impacting many individuals remains unclear. Therefore, filled with a sense of uncertainty and self-doubt, Taiwan is constantly frustrated by our national identity and international role.
The fault line of the ethnic origin, along with our evasions during the process of social development, “Taiwan” becomes a name that is often ignored internationally. Following the social mainstream of promoting open-mindedness and multiculturalism, our confusion over self-identification and international position is still unanswered. Taiwan society collectively presents a “blank” personality trait — mixed with a sense of insecurity, an inferiority complex, and blame. However, ‘blank’ is not accurate enough, nor could other colors, such as blue, green, orange, red or white be fully precise. From “Orphan of Asia” to today’s“The Land of Little Rain”, artists keep asking themselves over and over again that : Where did I (Taiwan) come from, Where should I (Taiwan) go, and more crucially, Who am I? Who is Taiwan?
The main aim of F Studio curating 2020’s exhibition is to explore the “under color of Taiwan”. Through the medium of art and culturally diverse works of artists, we attempt to unfold and develop the conversation with artists’ soul, their environment, society and culture. The tone, shape, concept and power of under color are completely beyond words. Through artists’ hands and eyes, we try to take our audience into the journey of reflecting and contemplating themselves, to feel and experience the spiritual meaning behind the “under color”.

The “Under Colors.Taiwan” exhibition series, we intend to convey our observations and questions about Taiwan society. The views and interpretations derived from the dialogue between artists and space have mutual resonances with the concept of our exhibitions this year. Meanwhile, as the forms of domestic art integrate more into globalization, many new-generation artists also strive to highlight the subject of “Taiwan”, looking forward to breaking the limit of our marginalizing status with more experimental spirits and innovative ideas to overturn the conventional art forms.
The “Under Colors.Taiwan” exhibition series also follow the same context of social development. Combining the uniqueness of Taiwan and the commonality in Westernization, F Studio expects to help enhance Taiwan ‘s subjective consciousness during the trend of global diversification and boosts the self-recognition by displaying the real under color of Taiwan to encourage everyone to explore our true self, ending up stimulating the power of pluralism.
