Idas Losin

Idas Losin

Growing up in the central mountain range, Idas Losin is an indigenous artist of Atayal and Truku heritage in Taiwan. This famous and skilled oil painter often clearly expresses her identity and position of Taiwanese indigenous people in her paintings. Meanwhile, in terms of environmental protection and land reform issues, we can observe many special symbols relevant to these issues were used in her works to speak for her own community. After graduating from junior high school, Idas moved from Ruisui to Taipei for studies, and lived in the dormitory of a church. At that time she also participated in the Name Rectification Movement and Land Movement, followed by graduating from Fu-Hsin Art School and Taipei National University of the Arts. All these experiences in life drive Idas to explore the origin of herself and the starting point of her community.

Since 2013, Idas has launched the “Island Hopping Project”, which she has successively visited Rapa Nui (Easter Island), Hawaii, Guam, New Zealand etc., starting a spiritual journey towards a greater understanding of her own identity. Idas’ paintings focus mostly on the Austronesian-speaking people’s emotional connections between island-to-island, group-to-group, people-to-people, and people-to-land. This talented artist created a variety of works inspired by indigenous identity, land reform, environmental degradation, totems, tattoos, woven patterns and so on. Her considerable concern over the indigenous community and recognition for her own culture is fully portrayed through art during this project. Based on Taiwanese consciousness and the sense of existence, Idas emphasizes the inseparable relationship with ethnic groups, land and people. Participating in many international Artist-in-Residence projects, international joint exhibitions, and domestic exhibitions, she also held a large-scale solo exhibition named “Island Hopping, Fantasy and Milky Way” with XUE XUE FOUNDATION in 2019. As one of the most outstanding contemporary indigenous artists, Idas’ life of artistic creation continues and flourishes.

Looking back on the works of Idas Losin, the themes and styles of her paintings have been evolving gradually from the earliest indigenous portrait series, blank space series, totem/woven pattern series, island hopping series to the latest sunglasses series. Traveling through the cultural world of Austronesian-speaking people, Idas’ works have never left the quiet and transparent temperament, as if powerful waves come from the depth of the ocean with a warm breeze brought by the Pacific Ocean touching the surface of her paintings. Audience can easily feel the power of stillness and calmness through the colors and themes of her works without much explanation. Even works that contain the meanings of reflective criticism can be delivered in an objective, firm and mild. With her fine brushwork and stark composition, the widen tolerance is unreservedly emerged – Idas Losin is indeed the daughter of  the Nature.

In the《Islands Colors Humanity》exhibition, several paintings of the sunglasses series and totem/woven pattern series are selected– women’s arms and bodies with ethnic tattoos, other indigenous totems reflected in a traveler’s sunglasses. Also, a soft sculpture will be exhibited, as a fresh attempt made by Idas to interpret some new aspects of art. Interestingly and boldly, combining the traditional weaving culture of indigenous people with her artistic talent, Idas start to discuss another ethnic imagery and explore a brand-new path based on her indigenous tradition.

At the beginning of 2020, it is meaningful that the《Islands Colors Humanity》exhibition can be held in Taiwan’s most historic district, between a lively local market and a incense-filled temple flocked by crowds. As a gift presented by Idas Losin and F studio to Dadaocheng, we are pleased to invite community conversations to facilitate cross-sector collaboration. Also, we encourage everyone to continuously explore themselves through indigenous people of Taiwan, Han people and Austronesian-speaking people.

Sincerely welcome every one of you into Idas Losin’s world.
